Explore the Palace of King Minos, the Labyrinth and myth of Minotaur, the Archaeological Museum and the capital of Crete!

On this tour we will travel to the east along the northern coast of the island, towards Heraklion. We will visit the most famous archaeological site in Crete, the famous Minoan palace of Knossos considered to be the oldest city in Europe.

The place had been inhabited almost 6000 years BC and on the ruins of a Neolithic settlement was built the first Minoan palace, residence of the legendary King Minos. Knossos was the economic, political and social centre of Minoan civilization, which flourished 4000 years ago.

Knossos is intensely associated with several key symbols, such as bulls and double-headed axes and the fascinating myth of the Labyrinth and the Minotaur.

Our next stop is the vibrant capital of Crete, the city of Heraklion.

We will have three and a half hours of free time to go shopping, stroll through the historical center of the city and visit the new Archaeological Museum with all the important findings of the Minoan era.

Telling the story of Crete, the Archaeological Museum of Heraklion brings to life more than 5,500 years of history, from Neolithic times to the Minoans and beyond.

You can’t fully understand Crete if you haven’t visited the Archaeological Museum of Heraklion. It’s as simple as that. Housing antiquities covering 5,500 years of history, from Neolithic to Roman times, it most famously includes many of the treasured objects of Europe’s oldest civilisation: the bull-leaping, snake-holding, literacy-busting Minoans.

Fabulous museum. So much to see. Beautifully laid out with lots of explanation about the artefacts and their relation to Crete / the Minoans / Knossos. An absolute must if you’re going to Heraklion to visit Knossos!
